Prokofiev, Violin Concerto No. 2
February 17, 2012, 8 p.m. CST (9 p.m. EST)
To listen to the live stream of the concert,
go to
"...an exceptional performance of Sergei Prokofiev's
Second Violin Concerto. Soloist Vadim Gluzman
struck an ideal balance between the composer's
devotion to the kind of sweeping
Russian-flavored melodies he imagined might
mollify Soviet authorities in 1935 and the
elements of internal conflict he allowed to bubble
to the surface. Gluzman filled his interpretation
with the sound of hand-wringing tension and
a passionate quest for transcendence..."

"Just before intermission came the ISO's first performance of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 2 in C-sharp minor. Unconventional in key as well as in its dark orchestral palette, the work was carried into the hearts of the audience by Vadim Gluzman's splendid, deep-toned command of its technical and interpretive challenges. In the long lines of the introduction and the Adagio, the tensile strength of his phrasing was remarkable." Indystar.com Read full review here.

http://www.violinist.com/blog/laurie/20114/12266/
"The excitedly awaited soloist for the evening was the exuberant violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, no stranger to the Festival. An original and eclectic musician, Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg is often a visceral and physical player.... ...there was originality and daring in her approach – and she clearly enjoyed herself, much to the delight of the audience! The work starts with a drum roll and a short phrase by the strings and then..., an open “G” with a fermata (hold) for the soloist. I have never heard this opening “G” played so long – so long that it became a musical entity , in and of itself, not just the usual beginning of something else. This was only the first of several iconoclastic musical moments. …. … Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg is a sensational violinist – gorgeous tone and vibrato, a great sense f rhythm and drama and originality." - 50th Anniversary Season of Eastern Music Festival, North Carolina July 9, 2011, cvnc.org ____________________________ Read about Carlos Miguel Prieto's successful debut with Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra
