New orchestra’s inaugural concert
will benefit national charity
Children of the Night

in concert with the New York Women’s Ensemble
November 29, 2011 at Carnegie Hall

  On  Tuesday, November 29th, the New York Women’s Ensemble, under the direction of music director and international musician Virginia Luque, will perform an all-Mozart concert in its debut performance at Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. Renowned musicians soprano Ana María Martínez and pianist Sonia Rubinsky will guest with the 50-member orchestra, and soprano Elisa Brown will make a special appearance, singing the world premiere of a work composed by
Ms. Luque to commemorate the concert.

Children of the Night, a world-renowned 32-year old organization which has rescued over 10,000 children from prostitution since 1979, has been selected to receive a percentage of the profits from this concert.

A one-of-a-kind orchestra that is the  musical arm of Music for Life NYC, an organization with the goal of utilizing the universal language of music to contribute in a positive way to society, each concert given by the New York Women’s Ensemble will benefit a selected not-for-profit organization (Music for Life NYC donates a percentage of the net profits of each concert to the continuing work of selected charities that have demonstrated a devotion to helping under-served individuals and communities).  The New York Women’s Ensemble is made up of 50 of today’s foremost female classical musicians with solo careers and careers as members of such renowned organizations as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York City Opera Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Detroit Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony, among others.

Children of the Night  is a privately funded non-profit organization established in 1979 and dedicated to rescuing America’s children from prostitution. Founded by Dr. Lois Lee, a pioneer and trailblazer in the field, Children of the Night and has rescued over 10,000 children from prostitution since opening its doors with more than $40 million in private donations. Diplomats come from all over the world to observe Dr. Lee's ground-breaking work at the Children of the Night home. Dr. Lee has received countless awards for her humanitarian work, most notably the prestigious President's Volunteer Action Award, presented to her by President Ronald Reagan at the White House in 1984. A permanent memorial portrait at the Frederick Douglas Museum honors her 1994 National Caring Award.

About the Artists
Music Director Virginia Luque is a native of Algeciras (Cadiz), Spain.  A conductor and world-renowned guitar virtuoso, Virginia Luque began studying privately at the age of 11 with musical legend, guitarist Andres Segovia. She has performed in major concert halls around the world. Ms. Luque recently recorded Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. As a conductor, Ms. Luque has recorded the Mozart Piano Concerto in C major, K.467 and the Symphony in G minor, K. 550, with pianist Sonia Rubinsky, and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Grammy Award winner Ana María Martínez' dramatic range distinguishes her as one of today's most sophisticated lyric sopranos. Highlights of her current season include performances as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Houston Grand Opera, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra with the Los Angeles Opera, Alice Ford in Falstaff with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, a concert with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra in Moscow, and a concert tour with Andrea Bocelli including a performance in New York’s Central Park which will be broadcast on television. Recent engagements have included leading roles with Lyric Opera of Chicago, De Nederlandse Opera, Washington National Opera, Opera de Puerto Rico, The Metro-politan Opera, Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, Opera de Bastille, the Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne Festival and the Ravinia Festival.

Pianist Sonia Rubinsky reflects the great tradition of virtuoso performance with constantly acquired new repertoire ranging from the Baroque to contemporary. She has performed worldwide as a recitalist, and has toured Brazil extensively, appearing with its most notable orchestras. In 2009, she received a Latin Grammy for “Best Recording of the Year” Classical Category, for her eighth recording of the Complete Piano Works by Villa-Lobos for Naxos. She has recorded works by Scarlatti (Algol) for which she won the Carlos Gomes Prize in Brazil, Mozart (Cláss-icos), and Mendelssohn (Algol). Ms. Rubinsky is Artist-in-Residence at the Aldwell Center in Jerusalem, Israel.

American soprano Elisa Brown is dedicated to helping others through song. In addition to performing on behalf of philanthropic organizations to help raise awareness for the less fortunate around the world, She has performed in Off-Broadway productions and has been a featured performer in numerous chamber ensembles throughout the Americas. Ms. Brown received a Bachelor of Music degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music and studied voice with internationally distinguished voice teachers Maria Farnworth, Josephine Mongiardo, and Maria Powell.
